Fluoride Varnish

Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride which is applied to the tooth's surface.  It is not a permanent varnish but due to its "sticky" nature it is able to stay in contact with the tooth surface for several hours.

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria colonizing on the teeth and producing acid which dissolves the enamel.

Fluoride varnish acts to slow this demineralization and helps promote remineralization.

We would recommend that children with a low caries risk have this varnish applied 6 monthly and those who we are more concerned about will be asked to return every 3 months.

When you return in 3 months it is not necessary to see a dentist, the fluoride varnish will be applied by one of our extended duty nurses.

We will provide you with an explanation leaflet when your child has had the fluoride varnish applied to take away and read.

We actively encourage this procedure to instil in your children the importance of caring for their teeth from childhood throughout their adult lives.
